The exception to this is if Venice becomes a Great Power, which it is likely to do in the early game. Taking the five non-sphered nations can be time consuming, but generally will not be contested by other Great Powers. Five, Etruria, Modena, Parma, Lucca and Milan, start outside any sphere. Two, Savoy and Genoa, start in the Dual Monarchy’s sphere. Two, the Papal States and Ferrara, start in Aragon’s sphere. To form Aragon-Italy, Aragon must have all the Italian countries minus Venice in her sphere. If you’d prefer the military option (especially for those states that start in the sphere of other Great Powers) researching army techs, especially Army Professionalism, is best, though your tech school will slow research into these techs. Encouraging bureaucrats in your states to boost administration up to 100% in all states will help bolster the small tax revenue, and you’ll also get a gold rush on Sardinia early on that will help monetary issues further.įorming Aragon-Italy will require acquiring and keeping all the Italian states in your sphere, so researching the commerce techs that boost influence is a good idea if one wishes to do so peacefully (you’ll get a boost on these from your tech school). Cutting two of these entirely and halving the largest should make this more manageable, but also cutting funding for the navy should bring the budget back into the green. The cause of this is its massive navy, split into three divisions. Of the general things to sort on day one, the most pressing is balancing the budget, as Aragon begins the game spending hundreds more than it can afford. However, under player guidance it can very easily be the preeminent power of the world, with a quasi-Roman empire stretching from Valencia to Athens!
Under the AI Aragon tends to sink into second-power irrelevance, occasionally forming Aragon-Italy successfully but then losing the War Over Italy. It also starts with the tech school Business Schools and Tycoon Capitalism, which is good for commerce and industry techs but bad for army and navy techs. It starts out as relatively poor, the poorest among the starting Great Powers, and with only a small industry, but a large army and a massive navy. Catalan is the primary culture with South Italian as accepted, but you will gain opportunities to add more accepted cultures through decisions. As well as this, it starts with the Papal States, Venice, Provence and Ferrara in its sphere of influence. Aragon starts the game as #6 Great Power, in possession of the three easternmost states of Iberia, the south of the Italian peninsula, the north coasts of Algeria and Tunisia and the western Mediterranean islands, including Malta.
